Greetings, my name is Steven Hylands, I am a web designer hailing from Belfast Northern Ireland.
I have also been known to attempt epic adventures accumulating in the odd photo or film, weather permitting. My days are spent arguing discussing usability with @hamstarr, and my nights often involve shouting at atrocious reality tv.
a history
I started web designin' way back in the day before the millennium bug, when tables ruled, flash was awesome and ie6¹ wasn't Satan etcetera. It was in this primitive age that I discovered photoshop and decided to abuse the blending options to create unstructured graphic madness. I used this futuristic software to forge several successful e-wrestling federations, you might remember the Galactic Wrestling Federation or the Millennial Wrestling Massacre... No? Probably for the best.
When it made sense to get serious about designin' in 2004, I chose to study Interactive Multimedia Design, a course which nearly seamlessly blended programmin' with designin'.² Since then I have had the pleasure of working with some super talented folks at Manleys, The Branding House and top digital agency Rehab Studio.

In early 2009 I started a web design company with noise generating machine Simon Hamilton. We embarked on a mission to invent remarkable web creations. Initially we worked with a few dedicated and exceptional people to forge unique web experiences, but more recently we have been slaving away on our first web application. Shylands.com was launched in the most likely rainy summer of 2007, when I decided it might be fun to freelance for a little while. To my surprise, this colour crazy jagged effort was acknowledged on some of the web's finest design showcases, which I still greatly appreciate to this very day!
The site was designed & developed with tools that I most likely wouldn't use today, but hey I must of done something right.
other interesting facts
- If we were to meet in person, it is unlikely I would effectively communicate on any expected human level.
- I still enjoy watching professional wrestling, playing pokemon games and reading fantasy novels. I expect I will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
- From time to time I have been known to google myself.
